Gliding through the canopy into the sunshine

Charles and his team recently pruned an enormous ficus tree for a client on Leisure Isle in Knysna, a premier holiday resort on the Garden Route in South Africa. To Charles, as usual, this was not just another job; it was another special experience...

Charles says: “Pruning a tree of this magnitude requires constant retrospection and contemplation… gliding through its canopy takes the breath away! Surgical removal of several imposing branches of one metre diameter is an uplifting start… cleaning out the remaining canopy lets sunshine into our lives!” BEFORE above. AFTER below.

Charles has become well known on South Africa's famous Garden Route for his work as an arborist or arboriculturist. He has a National Certificate in Horticulture and has practised in South Africa, the US and Europe.
It is only by talking to Charles on site that one begins to realise what an intricate science he is engaged in, the insight he has developed and why his services have grown so in demand. Charles comes from an artistic - and scientific - family and approaches his work like an artist – aesthetics playing a big role in his inspiration, just as science has in his professional approach. One of his greatest challenges in Plettenberg Bay and elsewhere has been to guide many clients out of a knee-jerk approach when dealing with trees and shrubs that seem ‘problematic’ – the “I can’t see THE VIEW…so cut it all down!” syndrome, or what Charles likes to call “urbanitis”. Uninformed owners of (often upmarket) urban properties (often with views) who are surprised and delighted to find what miracles are possible with knowledge, understanding and patience.
